Winter is upon us in full swing and with it the potential for damage that can occur to concrete after an extended period of time in cold weather. Repeated freezing and thawing happens due to fluctuating temperatures during daytime and nighttime. This in turn can lead to rain, snow and ice entering through any cracks causing the concrete to move. It is often referred to as thermal expansion and contraction. If not controlled, it can lead to more server cracking. While difficult to avoid in places like Canada, there are ways to help in slowing the process from taking route.
The most effective method in preventing cracking by creating joints in the contract. Joints are where groves are cut or sawed into driveways, pavements, floors, sidewalks and walls. By having these joints precut into the concrete, contractors are able to divert damage to a predetermined location.
Another way to reduce the likelihood of cracks from occurring is to use concrete sealer. Using concrete sealer prevents liquids from being absorbed. It can last anywhere from six months to three years depending on the weather and traction.
