A bike lane in Warsaw Poland has just opened up new possibilities for the future of concrete construction and home design. TPA Instytut Badan Technicznych in Pruszkow unveiled their solar powered bike lane last week near Lidzbark Warminski in the Mazury region. The synthetic material uses particles called luminophores that absorb solar energy during the day and are then able to emit up to over ten hours light at night.
The material has yet to be tested to see how long it will last when in use as well as seeing if it will be affordable to utilize around the world. It has quite large implications for how it could be used in the future for concrete construction. Imagine stepping out onto a stamped concrete patio at night and instead of using lamps, your patio is what gives off light, be it just accents or the entirety of it. Your hot tub or shed pad could be self sufficient in lighting your way too and from the house. This technology could also be used on exterior walls as well as sidewalks in the city. The possibilities are quite vast but only time will tell where this breakthrough will lead.
